Of many Google algorithm updates added over the last decade, here are the things that turned SEO forever.

Google declares to update its search algorithm various thousand times per year. In the official majority of cases, Google algorithm updates are too little to notice. But, every once in a while, Google proposes a change so necessary, that it interrupts the process we do SEO regularly.

1.Panda(February , 2011)

How it works: The Panda algorithm update allows a so-called “quality score” to pages. This score is used as a ranking determinant. Originally, the results of Panda were meek, but in January 2016 it was always organized into Google’s core algorithm. Since then, update rollouts have become extra frequent, so both Panda fines and recoveries now happen quicker.

While keywords continue to be important, the Hummingbird algorithm gives it the potential for a page to rank for a question even if it doesn’t include the specific words the users entered. This is achieved with the help of actual language processing that relies on latent semantic indexing, co-occurring 

terms, and synonyms.

How to fix: Increase your keyword research and focus on the concepts behind the keywords. Accurately analyze related searches, equivalents, and co-occurring terms. Great references of such ideas are Google Related Searches and Google Related Queries, as well as Google Autocomplete suggestions. 

4. Rank Brain(October 2015)

Perils: Lack of query-specific relevance; inconsiderable content; poor UX.

How it works: RankBrain is a part of the Google Hummingbird algorithm. It is a machine learning system that helps Google recognize the meaning behind questions and assist best-matching results in answer to those queries. Google calls RankBrain the most valuable ranking factor.

While we don’t know the specific method behind this major update, the consent is that RankBrain is effective for customizing a user’s Google search results. 6. Medic(May 2018)

Perils: Lack of authorization on YMYL websites; weak E-A-T signals.

7. Bert (October 2019)

Perils: Poorly written content; lack of focus; lack of context.

How it works: This Google algorithm uses natural language processing technology to better understand search queries, read text, recognize entities, and relations between entities. We’ve seen Panda, Hummingbird, and RankBrain updates shift away from keywords, and the BERT update is the conclusion of this effort — it allows Google to know much more difference in both queries and search results.

How to fix: We’ve lived to see the day when Google is paying good writing. Like nevermore before, it is necessary to strive for a solid copy. It means you should go easy on fuzz words and use an interpretive style of writing. It is also a great idea to do entity research when producing copy — including relevant entities helps create a context for your content.

8. Core Updates(2017-present)

How it works: As far back as 2017, Google has started to refer to more powerful updates as core updates. Since then, there is even less clarity about what those updates are and which parts of the search they are meant to improve. SEOs would often track post-update ranking variations and try to figure out what specifically has changed, but there is rarely a conclusive observation. Google core updates are likely just improvements on previous Google updates or maybe bundles of smaller updates tied together.

How to fix: Since the results of Google core updates are often unknown, one thing you can do is trace SERP history for the keywords you are targeting. Once the update arrives, you can review which of your competitors have moved up or down in rankings and make an guided view regarding the relevant factors

9. Page Experience Update (June 25, 2021)

After many delays, Google started rolling out the Page Experience Update on June 25th, declaring that the rollout would stay through August 2021. This update combined Core Web Vitals and affected both organic results and News results

Core Update

A follow-up to the June Core Update, the July 2021 Core Update rolled out from July. Peak volatilization on MozCast hit 102.7°F on July 1st, but we saw warmth in the 90s on July 5th, 8th, and 11th. Like most maximum Core Updates, Google was light on specifics.
